Jakarta in Food & Coffee

Thursday, January 04, 2007

I thought after 17 years previously living in this City, what more could I expect to discover? What places I have not visited and which path of the city street that I have not been crossed or at least know of. During this trip, I discover a lot of development in the old city. Discovering areas of Jakarta that I have never knew ever existed. In short, I enjoyed my time there.

Everything has changed. Some if not all of my friends has started working. Nine-to-five. They hardly have time for me during my first week in town. Bastards. But still, love them heaps :) Went out with friends that i havent seen in years! Some even since I left Indonesia around 5 years ago. It was nice to experience something a little bit different this time.

One day stuck out the most though. Food marathon in a day.

From Edogin, Kemang Food Fest to Bubur Barito

It was truly a blend of taste and cuisine. The day was started at lunchtime. My cousin's boyfriend was celebrating his birthday at this posh Japanese restaurant called Edogin. It was a buffet. And it wasn't cheap. The logic works out that you have to get the value out of the price you paid for. So I did. I haven't had so much Salmon in one sitting (or fish and other seafood for that matter). I was so scared I would get an alergic reaction at anytime because of excessive seafood.

After the lunch i had another appointment with some of my other friends to try this new food place called, Kemang Food Fest. The name gives the impression that it is a food festival - but it actually isn't! It's a foodcourt in the open air style. They pretty much have everything you want - japs, Italian, turkish, chinese, burgers, porridge. All under the same tarpauline. There were the 5 of us and we all ordered different type of food. Slowly but surely, we got through everything. Phew, what a mission!

At Kemang Food Fest, there were also stalls that sells Shisha. It's a hookah lounge, so it's called. I have never tried it before but I remember Ozge was telling me about it. After much consideration (I'm not a smoker and never intended to be one - So I'm very cautious with this kind of thing) and after seeing a table across us ordered one and it looked quite easy to use we ended up ordering one as well. Well, it wasn't as easy as I thought. Everytime I exhale it's either no smoke coming out of my mouth or I coughed. It was quite a bit of an experience though. I even took pictures to show! :D It's just... dont let Dad see these hehehehe.. ;p

Our food adventure didn't stop there. They were asking me where do I want to go which I then said I want to try Bubur Barito. It's world famous in Jakarta. Bubur Barito sells rice porridge. (Bubur= porridge). It is located in Jalan Barito (I think.... - a street called Barito). Thus the name Bubur Barito. There is nothing posh about Bubur Barito but people says it sells the best bubur in Jakarta. And... the verdict is, they are right! We ended up sharing two bowls of porridge between the 5 of us. Not because it was not good, but because we all were too full to have a bowl each.

Anyways.. enough on the praises on the food. I can go on and on and on about food places in that city. And this blog would be a food-review blog. Now, I would like to very much complain about the coffee. I. Need. Good. Coffee. NOW.

Everytime said to my friends that I need coffee the first thing they said is always, "Let's go to Starbucks." Umm, no, somewhere else. "Okay, lets go to Coffee Bean." Another chain. No thank you, I mean real coffee, real cafe. "Where the hell do you want to go, Nikita? You're so fussy!"

Haha, it's funny to see their reaction to my fussy-ness over coffee. They came to realise that I have become a coffee-addict. But really, it is hard to find a good cup of mochacinno. At one chocolatier cafe when I asked if they sell coffee (which they said yes) and would like to order a Mochacinno they said they don't have it - only Capucinno. In other places... they have "Mocha latte". They have "Mochacinno Rainbow." "Mochacinno float." "Ice Mocha." But they don't have a good old plain friggin' Mochacinno. Sheeesh! The first thing to do once I get back to Wellington is to buy myself a cup of Mochacinno. The one from UniStop will do.
